Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

  • Nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas, is a safe and gentle way to help children relax during dental treatment.

  • It’s a sweet-smelling gas mixed with oxygen that your child breathes through a small nose mask. Within minutes, it helps them feel calm, light, and comfortable while staying awake and responsive.

  • Ideally, have your child eat a light meal 2–3 hours before the visit and avoid heavy foods right before the appointment.

  • Once the procedure is done, we flush the gas out with pure oxygen — its effects wear off within minutes, so your child can return to normal activities right away.

  • Nitrous oxide is one of the safest forms of sedation in dentistry and is often the best option for mild anxiety or sensitive gag reflexes.
